OUR STORY
We’re family. We’re women. We’re hometown proud. We’re traditional and progressive. We’re a lot like a lot of folks. As we move towards a new and exciting future, we remember the past that connects us.
On our first introduction to American Mahjong, there was a moment of true nostalgia and a memory of our grandmother, who taught us how to play games at her folding card table, and whose tablecloth, specifically made to fit that card table, we still have and use. Before the first game started, we paused for a moment to acknowledge this to our host. This must’ve been what our grandmother experienced in all of those Spite and Malice and bridge games with her friends.
As you may know, some of the beauty and appeal of Mahjong is the aesthetics of the tiles, not just visually, but their weight, their touch, and the various sounds they make, all of which enhance the experience of playing. When it was time to pick our first set, we had two realizations, that cultural heritage was a well known entity in the beautiful designs of the tiles, but that our cultural heritage was not represented in any existing designs. Our mission is to change that. We’ll start with our home and the places in our hearts and see where we go from there.
So cheers! Here’s to the Bird Bams, to you and all of us, and to the circle unbroken.
